Parent-Child Interaction Therapy | Denver & Greenwood Village
What is PCIT?
PCIT stands for Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. It’s a simple, hands-on way to help you and your child get back on the same team. You love your child deeply, but when their behaviour or reactions are unpredictable, it can feel bigger than you know how to handle. Many parents, like you, come into this process feeling overwhelmed, unsure what to try next, or worried they’re missing something. PCIT gives you clear guidance and support so you don’t have to figure it out all by yourself.
PCIT teaches you practical skills that help calm the chaos, reduce power struggles, and help your child feel safer and more regulated. The focus is on strengthening your relationship first, because kids listen and cooperate more when they feel connected and understood.
The unique characteristic of PCIT is the live coaching. You play with your child, and your therapist quietly supports you through a small earbud called the “bug-in-the-ear.” It’s gentle, real-time guidance that helps you know what to say and do in the moment.
It feels less like therapy and more like having someone steady in your corner, helping you respond with confidence and connection, even in the moments that used to feel impossible.
As a Parent:
- "Why won’t my child listen to me the first time?"
- "I promised myself I wouldn’t yell, and yet here I am."
- "I don’t feel connected to my child anymore."
- "Nothing I try seems to work for long."
As a Child:
- "I get in trouble all the time, and I don’t know why."
- "I can’t calm down when I’m upset."
- "I want to do better, but I don’t know how."
- "Everything feels too big and too fast."
We offer PCIT to help you and your child grow together, handle emotions more smoothly, and build the kind of home life you both want. Visit us in Denver, Greenwood Village or online anywhere in Colorado.

How PCIT Can Help
Reduce Parenting Stress and Overwhelm
PCIT therapy gives you tools you can use right away. Instead of reacting in the moment, you learn how to guide your child through big feelings and challenging behavior with more calm and confidence. Parents often describe feeling relief within the first few sessions because the conflict starts to ease.
Support Children with Big Emotions
Children with ADHD, ASD, impulsivity, or hyperactivity often struggle with emotional regulation. PCIT helps them feel safer, calmer, and more connected. They begin to understand expectations, follow directions more consistently, and recover from frustration more quickly.
Improve Cooperation and Listening
This is one of the biggest shifts families notice. PCIT therapy teaches you how to give simple, clear commands in a way your child can understand. Power struggles fade. Routines feel smoother. Daily life becomes easier.
Create Warmer, More Connected Relationships
The first phase of PCIT focuses entirely on strengthening the bond between you and your child. Many parents say, “I finally enjoy being with my child again.” That emotional foundation makes every other skill easier.
Help Children Feel Safe, Supported, and Capable
As your child learns to respond to structure and attention differently, their confidence grows. Home feels safer. Emotions feel easier to handle. You both feel more connected and less overwhelmed.
When you’re ready to become the parent you have always wanted to be, we’re here to help you take the first step.
Why Us
Why Work With
Integrated Behavioral Health
.
I believe therapy & assessments should be a collaborative process between the client and the therapist.
At Integrated Behavioral Health, our goal is to help families feel more confident and to have the resources they need. We support you in riding the ups and downs of parenting, while helping you navigate the complex landscape of having a child with unique needs.
When you’re facing anxiety or uncertainty about how to parent effectively, it can be overwhelming to balance all the competing priorities. You might struggle to find a parenting approach that aligns with your values and helps you feel connected and capable. We’re here to help you understand and meet your child’s unique needs while staying true to yourself.
We support the emotional well-being of parents as individuals too. This includes stress management, identity shifts, relationship strain, and burnout. When caregivers feel supported and grounded, the entire family benefits.
With over a decade of combined experience, we offer therapy and evaluations that are grounded in evidence-based practices, collaborate with professionals and individuals working with your child, and provide comprehensive recommendations to help you or your child thrive. We guide you through handling the toughest challenges, providing you with practical tools and strategies that foster confidence and fulfillment in your journey.
We believe the therapeutic process should be:

Empathetic
Being a parent can feel overwhelming, especially with the flood of information from social media and parenting books. We meet you and your child exactly where you are and offer compassion and empathy to help you move forward.

Evidence-based
Our diverse therapy methods and assessments are all rooted in evidence-based practices. Our goal is to help you and your child make tangible progress and feel empowered to navigate daily life confidently, even beyond therapy.

Values-based
Every family, child, and parent are different. What is okay for one parent is not okay for another parent. We make sure that we understand your family’s values and come alongside to support them rather than prescribing one type of approach to a situation.

Our Approach
How PCIT Works
PCIT has two phases, each one building skills you can use for life.
The Two Phases of PCIT
1. Child-Directed Interaction (CDI):
You learn connection-building skills that help your child feel calmer, safer, and more regulated. Tantrums often decrease quickly in this stage.
2. Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI):
You learn how to give effective commands and follow through in a way that creates consistent cooperation without yelling or arguing.
First, we will teach you, as the parent, the skills to communicate commands effectively and follow through in a way that creates consistent cooperation without yelling or arguing. Then we take the next step, teaching you connection-building skills that help your child feel calmer, safer, and more regulated.
We start by hearing your story, learning about your child, and explaining the PCIT model. You’ll learn the first set of skills and begin to understand why your child’s behaviors appear the way they do.
In future sessions, you and your child play together while your therapist coaches you from another room via a small earbud. You’ll receive supportive, simple prompts that help you practice new skills in real time. Families often describe this as the moment things click, because you’re not trying to remember techniques on your own.

Questions About PCIT
Is PCIT effective for aggression, hitting, or severe non-compliance?
Yes. PCIT is one of the most effective treatments available for disruptive behavior in young children. It gives parents clear, predictable tools to use in the moment, which helps settle the chaos quickly. Many families start to see less aggression, fewer power struggles, and shorter tantrums once they begin using the skills at home. The structure brings relief, and the consistency helps your child feel safer and more regulated.
What ages are best for PCIT?
PCIT therapy is designed for children ages 2 to 7. Kids in this range respond especially well because they’re still very connected to their parents’ attention, guidance, and cues.
For children ages 8 to 10, we use an adapted version of PCIT that keeps the heart of the model the same but shifts how we practice. Instead of floor play, we use simple games, shared activities, or structured conversations that feel natural for older kids. The coaching stays the same, and the skills remain just as helpful.
How long will PCIT take?
Most families complete PCIT therapy in about 12 to 20 sessions. Parents usually notice small but meaningful changes early on, sometimes within the first few weeks. The biggest factor in how quickly progress builds is consistent attendance and practicing the skills at home between sessions. The more you use the tools, the faster they start to shape new patterns in your home.
Will PCIT work if my child has ADHD or ASD?
Often yes. PCIT therapy can be tailored to fit the needs of children with ADHD or ASD, especially when behavior, emotional overwhelm, or rigidity make daily life stressful. The structure of PCIT helps kids in child therapy feel more secure, and the clear steps make expectations easier to understand. Parents often notice improvements in impulsivity, hyperactivity, aggression, and defiance as their child begins to feel more grounded and supported.
