What is Grief Therapy?
Grief isn’t a disorder to be cured or a checklist to be completed; it is a deep, personal response to losing someone who matters, or something that matters. At Integrated Behavioral Health, Grief therapy is about creating a space where you can learn how to carry it with you. We support individuals navigating bereavement, anticipatory grief, pet loss, and the complex “gray area” of ambiguous loss.
For kids and teens, we understand that they often process grief by “puddle jumping”; they might be devastated one moment and happy or asking for a snack the next. We use play therapy, art therapy, and bibliotherapy to help them find words for the “heavy” feelings they can’t quite explain yet.
For adults and young adults, we focus on lifting the fog and navigating what a new normal looks like for you. Whether you are dealing with traumatic grief or difficult life transitions, we use grounded approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you process the shock and find your footing again.
At Integrated Behavioral Health, we use evidence-based tools tailored to your family’s unique grief story, ensuring that while the loss remains a part of your story, you no longer feel crushed by the weight of it.
- Guilt around surviving when they didn’t, or that you somehow caused the loss (common in children)
- Pressure to feel like you have to be the one to “hold it all together” for others
- A loss of interest in hobbies or joys that you used to enjoy
- Feeling like you need to “shrink” your grief so others don’t get tired of hearing it
- The secondary losses that follow over the months and years to come (finances, future plans, social circle)
- As a child, feeling like you’re the only one going through something like this
We provide a soft place to land and the tools to help you understand your grief so you can begin to heal and move forward guilt-free. Visit us in Denver, Greenwood Village or online anywhere in Colorado. Serving surrounding communities.

How Grief Therapy Can Help
Navigating the Landscape of Loss
Grief can feel like it takes over every area of your life, like your thoughts, your body, and even your ability to imagine a future. Whether you’re dealing with bereavement, anticipatory grief, or life transitions, grief therapy helps you or your child recognize your unique “grief signature.” We develop strategies to manage the waves of sadness, face the world again, and move forward with greater confidence and peace.
Processing Traumatic Grief and Shock
When a loss is sudden or overwhelming, it can feel like your mind is stuck in a loop of the “what-ifs.” Using evidence-based approaches like EMDR, we help you or your child gently process the most painful parts of the story. Over time, this helps the sharp edges of the trauma soften, so you can focus on the love and the memories rather than just the shock.
Overcoming Isolation and Withdrawal
When the world feels heavy, pulling away from friends and activities can seem like the only way to cope, but isolation can make the weight of grief feel even heavier. We help you or your child gently re-engage with the world in a safe, supportive way, helping you build the resilience needed to face once-intimidating social situations or daily tasks again.
Reducing Guilt and Self-Criticism
Many people feel a deep sense of “survivor’s guilt” or shame, worrying that having a good day means they are forgetting the person they lost. Grief therapy provides a compassionate space to challenge these heavy beliefs, helping you separate your love from your suffering. You are allowed to find joy again, and you don’t have to navigate that complicated transition alone.
Parent Support and Family Connection
When a child is grieving, parents often feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to help without overwhelming them. At Integrated Behavioral Health, we support you as much as we support your child. We’ll help you understand what grief can look like in kids, how to respond in those hard moments, and how to stay connected even when emotions run high.
Building Resilience and Lasting Peace
The pain of loss doesn’t disappear overnight, and it doesn’t have to. What can change is how it lives in your daily life. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), art therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we help you or your child tolerate the waves of grief, manage the distress of the “new normal,” and build confidence in your ability to carry your loved one’s legacy forward.
When you’re ready to become the parent you have always wanted to be, we’re here to help you take the first step.
Why Us
Why Work With
Integrated Behavioral Health
.
I believe therapy & assessments should be a collaborative process between the client and the therapist.
At Integrated Behavioral Health, our goal is to help families feel more confident and to have the resources they need. We support you in riding the ups and downs of parenting, while helping you navigate the complex landscape of having a child with unique needs.
When you’re facing anxiety or uncertainty about how to parent effectively, it can be overwhelming to balance all the competing priorities. You might struggle to find a parenting approach that aligns with your values and helps you feel connected and capable. We’re here to help you understand and meet your child’s unique needs while staying true to yourself.
We support the emotional well-being of parents as individuals too. This includes stress management, identity shifts, relationship strain, and burnout. When caregivers feel supported and grounded, the entire family benefits.
With over a decade of combined experience, we offer therapy and evaluations that are grounded in evidence-based practices, collaborate with professionals and individuals working with your child, and provide comprehensive recommendations to help you or your child thrive. We guide you through handling the toughest challenges, providing you with practical tools and strategies that foster confidence and fulfillment in your journey.
We believe the therapeutic process should be:

Empathetic
Being a parent can feel overwhelming, especially with the flood of information from social media and parenting books. We meet you and your child exactly where you are and offer compassion and empathy to help you move forward.

Evidence-based
Our diverse therapy methods and assessments are all rooted in evidence-based practices. Our goal is to help you and your child make tangible progress and feel empowered to navigate daily life confidently, even beyond therapy.

Values-based
Every family, child, and parent are different. What is okay for one parent is not okay for another parent. We make sure that we understand your family’s values and come alongside to support them rather than prescribing one type of approach to a situation.

How Grief Therapy Works

We Get To Know You
We begin by looking at how this loss has impacted you, your family, your child’s world, and your own energy as a caregiver. This allows us to build a trusting relationship and create a safe space where you do not have to perform strength.

We Create A Plan
Whether therapy is for you, your child, or your family, we work to understand your specific needs as you deal with grief. Together, we develop a plan that honors your loved one while prioritizing your healing.

We Help You Move Forward
Each of our sessions is a stepping stone toward helping you live a life that honors your journey with grief. We adjust our approach as you progress, using the skills we have built together to help you navigate life with more peace.

Questions About Grief Therapy
How do I know if my child’s grief is “normal” or if they need professional help?
Grief in children rarely follows a straight line. One minute they are in tears, and the next they are asking for a snack or wanting to play. That back and forth is actually very common. You might notice changes in their sleep, appetite, mood, or a sudden clinginess for a while. Usually, that is just part of a healthy, messy grieving process.
It may be time to reach out if those changes do not ease up over time. If you see things like ongoing regression, intense separation anxiety, refusing school for weeks, or any signs of self-harm, that is a signal they need more. If your child seems stuck in deep sadness without ever coming up for air, you don’t have to wait it out alone. We can help you sort through what is typical and what needs a little extra support.
Is it better to shield my child from the details of the loss to protect them?
Every parent wants to protect their child’s heart. It makes sense to want to soften the truth to keep them safe. However, children almost always sense when something big has happened. If we avoid clear language, their imaginations often fill in the blanks in ways that feel even scarier than the truth.
We encourage honest, age-appropriate conversations. Using clear words like died or death can feel uncomfortable at first, but it helps children understand what actually happened. We pair that honesty with reassurance about their safety and lots of space for their questions. You do not have to find the perfect words. We can help you navigate these conversations in a way that feels steady and supportive.

We are grieving the same person. Why does it feel like my partner and I are drifting apart?
Shared loss does not always pull people closer. Often, it just highlights how differently we cope. One partner may focus on staying busy, fixing things, or handling the logistics of life. The other may need to talk, cry, or sit with the feelings. Neither way is wrong. They are just different ways of surviving something painful.
When those differences are not understood, it can feel incredibly lonely. At Integrated Behavioral Health, we explore each person’s grief style and work on helping you respect each other’s pace so you can feel like a team again instead of two people grieving in separate corners.
How long is this going to last? When will we get back to normal?
This is one of the first questions almost every family asks. It’s natural for all of us to have a deep desire to put a date on the calendar when the pain will stop. The truth is that there is no clear end date for grief, and instead of focusing on getting over it, we focus on helping you carry it differently.
In the beginning, grief takes up all the space in the room. Over time, your life begins to grow around it. The loss is still there, but it eventually stops crowding out every single moment. Throughout our entire time together, we move at your pace, not a calendar’s pace. We invite you to book a free consultation, where we can get to know you, hear your story, and see if this feels like the right fit.
If we start feeling happy again, does that mean we are forgetting them?
This fear is so common, and many people quietly wonder if feeling better means they loved the person less. But healing does not mean forgetting. It just means your relationship is changing. The physical presence is gone, but the connection stays alive through your memories, your values, and the legacy they left behind.
Laughing again, enjoying a holiday, or smiling at an old story does not erase love. We often help families create ways to honor their person, whether that is a recipe book, a small garden, or a jar of favorite memories. Things like this can help you carry their memory with you without the pain having to stay at its highest intensity forever.
