[Episode 9] The Gut-Brain Connection: Why Your Child’s Mood Starts in the Gut with Dr. Laura Vanston

We live in a world of fragmented healthcare. We have “head problems” (anxiety, ADHD, mood) and “gut problems” (tummy aches, constipation), and we’re often told they have nothing to do with each other.

But as Dr. Laura Vanston, an integrative and functional medicine expert, shared on a recent episode of Kids These Days, everything is connected. If you’ve ever felt “butterflies” in your stomach when you’re nervous, you’ve experienced the top-down connection. But there is a second pathway—a bottom-up highway—where your gut is sending constant signals to your brain about whether or not it is safe to be a Human Being.

Here is the “Inside-Out” scoop on the gut-brain connection and how to support your child’s nervous system from the microbiome up.

1. The Serotonin Secret: 90% is in the Gut

Most of us think of serotonin—the “feel-good” neurotransmitter—as a brain chemical. But 90% of your body’s serotonin is actually manufactured in the gut. Your microbes aren’t just digesting food; they are producing dopamine, GABA (the “relaxation” chemical), and serotonin.

When the gut microbiome is in a state of dysbiosis (an imbalance of healthy vs. opportunistic bacteria), your child’s “Smart Brain” (Prefrontal Cortex) loses its supply of these vital chemicals. This is why a child struggling with anxiety often has a “nervous gut”—their biology is struggling to find balance.

2. The Leaky Gut & The Inflammation Trap

When the gut barrier becomes permeable (often called “Leaky Gut”), inflammatory molecules have a direct pathway into the bloodstream. This inflammation doesn’t just stay in the body; it crosses the blood-brain barrier and can manifest as:

  • Increased anxiety and irritability.

  • Difficulties with focus and ADHD-like symptoms.

  • “Foggy” thinking and low energy.

3. P.O.P (Plants On Purpose)

How do we fix it? We move away from perfectionism and toward small, sustainable “micro-shifts.” Dr. Laura suggests the P.O.P. Strategy: Plants On Purpose.

  • Fiber is Fuel: Fiber isn’t just “roughage”; it is the actual food for your good microbes.

  • Eat the Rainbow: Aim for variety over the course of a week, not necessarily every day.

  • The “Pop” Method: Make your child’s favorite meal and add one plant-based “pop” to it—a seed, a new spice like cinnamon or garlic, or a side of fruit.

  • Probiotic Ketchup: For picky eaters, look for fermented condiments (like fermented ketchup) to sneak beneficial bacteria into the meal without a battle.

4. The Vagus Nerve: The "Off-Switch" for Fight or Flight

The Vagus nerve is the physical highway connecting the head to the gut. When a child is stuck in “Fight or Flight,” their body sends signals that it isn’t a safe time to “Rest and Digest.”

We can use the breath to send a signal back down the Vagus nerve to the gut. Dr. Laura recommends:

  • Bear Breathing: Laying on the floor with a stuffy on the belly to ensure deep diaphragmatic expansion.

  • Stair Breathing: (Great for ADHD!) Taking small incremental sips of air “up the stairs” before one long exhale.

  • Bumblebee Breathing: Humming on the exhale to physically vibrate and activate the Vagus nerve.

5. Beyond the Plate: Key Nutrients to Watch

Sometimes, “Inside-Out” parenting requires a look at the biological data. Dr. Laura highlights five key nutrients that impact a child’s ability to regulate:

  1. Vitamin D: Vital for mood and immune function.

  2. Ferritin (Iron): Low iron makes the heart work harder, which can feel like a panic attack to a child’s nervous system.

  3. Zinc: A deficiency here is often linked to extreme picky eating and sensory sensitivities.

  4. Magnesium: The “calm” mineral that supports sleep and gut motility.

  5. Omega-3s (Fish Oil): An anti-inflammatory powerhouse for focus and brain health.

Resources & Next Steps

You don’t have to switch to an all-whole-food diet overnight. That would only trigger your own “Survival Brain.” Instead, start with one small shift today. Notice the sunset, take a deep belly breath with your child, or add one “plant on purpose” to dinner.
