What is Child Therapy?

Child therapy is tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of children. It’s a safe and welcoming space where kids can express themselves without fear of judgment or retaliation, allowing them to explore their thoughts and feelings freely.

Our therapists are skilled in connecting with children using a variety of evidence-based approaches, including CBT, ACT, mindfulness strategies, social skills training, EMDR, and experiential activities. We ensure therapy is tailored to each child’s developmental stage by incorporating age-appropriate techniques like storytelling, games, and interactive exercises to actively engage them in the therapeutic process.

Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, adjusting to changes in the family dynamic, or facing challenges at school, therapy provides them with the tools and support they need to cope, adapt, and thrive. Beyond simply addressing immediate concerns, child therapy delves deeper to uncover the root causes of issues, empowering children to develop essential skills for success in all areas of their lives – academically, socially, and emotionally.

In child therapy, we aim to nurture their inner strength, helping them grow into confident, capable individuals who can face life’s ups and downs with confidence and resilience.

How Child Therapy Can Help

In therapy, we work with your child to identify and understand their emotions, teaching them healthy coping strategies to manage difficult feelings such as anger, anxiety, or sadness. Through activities like mindfulness exercises, grounding techniques, and open conversation, we help your child build emotional resilience and develop a sense of inner calm. By learning to recognize and express their emotions in a constructive way, your child can navigate challenging situations with greater ease and confidence.
Communication is key to healthy relationships and social interactions. In therapy, we provide your child with opportunities to practice effective communication skills, such as active listening, assertiveness, and problem-solving. Through role-playing exercises, storytelling, and group discussions, we help your child learn how to express their thoughts and feelings clearly, set boundaries, and navigate conflicts with peers, family members, and teachers. By mastering these skills, your child can build stronger, more meaningful connections with others and feel more confident in their ability to communicate effectively.
Self-esteem and confidence are essential for your child’s overall well-being and success. In therapy, we focus on nurturing your child’s sense of self-worth and belief in their abilities. Through understanding their values, positive reinforcement, and a strong relationship, we help your child recognize and celebrate their unique strengths and talents. By fostering a supportive and validating environment, we empower your child to embrace their individuality, take on challenges with courage, and pursue their goals with confidence and determination.
Life transitions can be challenging for children, causing feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, and confusion. In therapy, we provide your child with the support and guidance they need to navigate these changes with resilience and adaptability. Through open and honest discussions, creative activities, and role-playing exercises, we help your child process their emotions, understand the changes happening in their life, and develop coping strategies to manage stress and uncertainty. By building their resilience and flexibility, your child can navigate life’s transitions with greater ease and confidence, emerging stronger and more resilient in the face of adversity.

Academic success is closely linked to your child’s emotional well-being and self-confidence. In therapy, we address any underlying issues that may be impacting your child’s academic performance, such as learning disabilities, attention difficulties, or test anxiety. Through personalized assessments, educational interventions, and skill-building exercises, we help your child develop the academic skills and strategies they need to succeed in school and beyond. By providing them with the tools and support they need to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential, we empower your child to excel academically and achieve their goals.

Why Us

Why Work With
Integrated Behavioral Health

.

I believe therapy & assessments should be a collaborative process between the client and the therapist.

At Integrated Behavioral Health, our goal is to help families feel more confident and to have the resources they need. We support you in riding the ups and downs of parenting, while helping you navigate the complex landscape of having a child with unique needs.

When you’re facing anxiety or uncertainty about how to parent effectively, it can be overwhelming to balance all the competing priorities. You might struggle to find a parenting approach that aligns with your values and helps you feel connected and capable. We’re here to help you understand and meet your child’s unique needs while staying true to yourself.

We support the emotional well-being of parents as individuals too. This includes stress management, identity shifts, relationship strain, and burnout. When caregivers feel supported and grounded, the entire family benefits.

With over a decade of combined experience, we offer therapy and evaluations that are grounded in evidence-based practices, collaborate with professionals and individuals working with your child, and provide comprehensive recommendations to help you or your child thrive. We guide you through handling the toughest challenges, providing you with practical tools and strategies that foster confidence and fulfillment in your journey.

We believe the therapeutic process should be:

Empathetic

Being a parent can feel overwhelming, especially with the flood of information from social media and parenting books. We meet you and your child exactly where you are and offer compassion and empathy to help you move forward.

Evidence-based

Our diverse therapy methods and assessments are all rooted in evidence-based practices. Our goal is to help you and your child make tangible progress and feel empowered to navigate daily life confidently, even beyond therapy.

Values-based

Every family, child, and parent are different. What is okay for one parent is not okay for another parent. We make sure that we understand your family’s values and come alongside to support them rather than prescribing one type of approach to a situation.

Questions About Child Therapy

Absolutely! Especially with younger children, we strongly believe that the best way to make progress is to have the loving support of parents. With the child’s permission, we share things we worked on in session so that you can help reinforce skills and strategies at home. We see your child for one hour a week and you’re with them for the remaining 167 hours a week! It’s essential that you are able to provide them with the support they need in the hours you’re with them.
The type of therapy depends on the specific presenting concerns. In general, all of our therapists utilize evidence-based practices, which means they have been shown to work to treat a variety of conditions. We know that time and money are valuable resources and want to make sure we are using strategies that help us make progress toward you and your child’s goals. We utilize cognitive behavioral strategies, mindfulness strategies, parent training, EMDR, and behavioral strategies when working with children.
I always tell parents that as adults we can find something to talk about in therapy every single week. For children, it can sometimes be a little different. On average, we see children for anywhere between 12-20 sessions. Therapy is always individualized to the child so there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach that is a defined number of sessions. Sometimes we see children for longer and sometimes shorter.
As with most things, it depends. Sometimes it is helpful to meet weekly to gain momentum and create a strong relationship. However, we also understand that you’re busy! If coming in every other week is the only thing that will work with your schedule we can be flexible 🙂
