What is ADHD Testing?

When attention challenges, trouble focusing, or acting without thinking might be affecting your child — or yourself, ADHD Testing in Denver & Greenwood Village can help you better understand how and why. At Integrated Behavioral Health, we don’t just give you a diagnosis. We help you understand what’s going on and what steps you can take to make things easier at school, work, and home.

If your child struggles to pay attention, follow directions, or sit still, an ADHD evaluation can help explain why. We also look at their strengths to give you a full picture. With this information, we can help you find the right support, like classroom accommodations, simple routines, or counseling, so your child can feel more confident and successful.

Additionally, an ADHD evaluation for adults can be a huge relief. If you’ve always wondered why staying organized, keeping up with work, or managing everyday tasks feels so hard, we can help. Understanding how your brain works can make a big difference — helping you create routines that work for you, feel more in control, and ask for the support you need.

At Integrated Behavioral Health, our ADHD Testing in Denver & Greenwood Village gives you more than answers; it gives you a clear path forward so you (or your child) can feel more confident, capable, and understood.

What Our ADHD Testing Involves

Comprehensive ADHD testing for children, teens, and adults across the Denver metro.

To test for ADHD, our licensed psychologists combine a structured clinical interview with validated rating scales completed by parents, teachers, or partners, including the Conners 4 and the BRIEF2, alongside cognitive testing (WISC-V) and direct measures of attention, memory, and executive functioning (NEPSY-II). We add other measures depending on what we’re seeing.

Here’s what those names mean when you’re sitting in the room. The Conners 4 asks the people who see you or your child every day the same standardized questions, so we’re comparing against how thousands of other families answered rather than one teacher’s impression. The BRIEF2 looks at executive functioning, meaning the work of starting a task, holding onto a plan, and shifting gears when something changes. The WISC-V tells us how someone learns and reasons, which is how we can tell attention difficulties apart from something else going on with learning. The NEPSY-II puts attention and memory to work directly, in the room, where we can watch what happens.

We test this broadly because anxiety, learning disorders, sleep problems, and trauma can all look like ADHD from the outside. Testing that only asks whether someone is inattentive will find inattention. We’re looking for what’s causing it.

Many families come to us wondering about both ADHD and autism. We can evaluate for both in one process. You can read more about autism evaluation and testing.

How ADHD Testing Can Help

For children, ADHD can make it hard to follow directions, stay focused in class, or complete assignments, even when they’re capable and bright. For adults, work can feel overwhelming, with missed deadlines, disorganized projects, and constant distractions. An ADHD assessment in Denver and  Greenwood Village helps uncover the root of these challenges and offers strategies to improve focus, organization, and follow-through.

ADHD doesn’t just affect attention. It can make emotions feel bigger and harder to control. Whether it’s frequent meltdowns, frustration over small things, or feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities, an ADHD assessment in Denver and Greenwood Village can help you or your child understand these emotional reactions and learn healthier ways to manage them.

Trouble with communication, forgetfulness, interrupting, and impulsive decisions can cause tension in relationships with family, friends, teachers, coworkers, or partners. An ADHD assessment helps make sense of these patterns so you can work on building stronger, healthier connections.

For children, difficulty reading social cues, taking turns, or managing frustration can make it hard to form lasting friendships. For adults, social struggles can lead to isolation or feeling misunderstood. An ADHD assessment highlights these challenges and offers tools to improve communication, social awareness, and confidence.

Whether it’s managing homework, juggling work tasks, handling finances, or simply keeping life on track, ADHD can leave you or your child feeling constantly overwhelmed. An ADHD assessment helps you understand why these challenges happen and provides practical strategies to make daily life feel less stressful and more manageable.

When you’re ready to become the parent you have always wanted to be, we’re here to help you take the first step.

Why Us

Why Work With
Integrated Behavioral Health

.

I believe therapy & assessments should be a collaborative process between the client and the therapist.

At Integrated Behavioral Health, our goal is to help families feel more confident and to have the resources they need. We support you in riding the ups and downs of parenting, while helping you navigate the complex landscape of having a child with unique needs.

When you’re facing anxiety or uncertainty about how to parent effectively, it can be overwhelming to balance all the competing priorities. You might struggle to find a parenting approach that aligns with your values and helps you feel connected and capable. We’re here to help you understand and meet your child’s unique needs while staying true to yourself.

We support the emotional well-being of parents as individuals too. This includes stress management, identity shifts, relationship strain, and burnout. When caregivers feel supported and grounded, the entire family benefits.

With over a decade of combined experience, we offer therapy and evaluations that are grounded in evidence-based practices, collaborate with professionals and individuals working with your child, and provide comprehensive recommendations to help you or your child thrive. We guide you through handling the toughest challenges, providing you with practical tools and strategies that foster confidence and fulfillment in your journey.

We believe the therapeutic process should be:

Empathetic

Being a parent can feel overwhelming, especially with the flood of information from social media and parenting books. We meet you and your child exactly where you are and offer compassion and empathy to help you move forward.

Evidence-based

Our diverse therapy methods and assessments are all rooted in evidence-based practices. Our goal is to help you and your child make tangible progress and feel empowered to navigate daily life confidently, even beyond therapy.

Values-based

Every family, child, and parent are different. What is okay for one parent is not okay for another parent. We make sure that we understand your family’s values and come alongside to support them rather than prescribing one type of approach to a situation.

Our Approach

How ADHD Testing Works

Step 1: Intake & Gathering Background

We start with a free 20-minute consultation to understand your concerns and goals. After that, we’ll meet with you (or with parents if assessing a child) to gather important background information. For children, we may also speak with teachers or observe your child in their classroom to better understand how they focus, learn, and interact with others.

Step 2: Comprehensive Testing

Next, we’ll complete in-person testing to assess attention, focus, memory, and executive functioning. We’ll also gather feedback through questionnaires completed by parents, teachers, or partners (when needed), giving us a full picture of how challenges show up at home, school, work, and in relationships.

Step 3: Personalized Feedback & Written Report

Once the ADHD assessment in Denver or Greenwood Village is complete, we’ll meet with you to review the results, answer your questions, and talk through next steps. You’ll receive a comprehensive report with clear recommendations to help at school, at work, or in daily life.

Step 4: Clear Next Steps

Whether you’re seeking school accommodations, workplace strategies, or tools to manage emotions and focus, you’ll leave with an action plan tailored to your unique strengths and needs — so you can move forward with confidence.

From your first testing session, you’ll have a comprehensive written report in four to six weeks. Because we don’t keep a waitlist, most families start within a few weeks of their consultation.

Questions About ADHD Testing

ADHD testing is a multi-step process designed to provide a full picture of how attention challenges, focus difficulties, and related symptoms show up in daily life. There isn’t a single test for ADHD. Instead, it’s a comprehensive evaluation.

The process typically begins with a thorough interview, where the clinician gathers information about your or your child’s symptoms, medical history, and family background. You’ll likely be asked about experiences in different settings, such as school, work, and relationships.

To better understand the symptoms, standardized questionnaires and rating scales are completed by the individual being assessed, as well as (when applicable) parents, teachers, or partners. Some assessments also include cognitive testing to evaluate attention, memory, and executive functioning skills.

For children, classroom observations may also be part of the evaluation to better understand their behavior in a real-world setting.

The goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the symptoms, explore how they impact daily life, and rule out other possible explanations for the challenges you’re seeing.

Testing happens in person and is usually completed in one or two sessions, depending on age and what we’re looking at. From there, you’ll have a comprehensive written report in four to six weeks, followed by a feedback session where we walk you through the results and what to do with them. We don’t keep a waitlist, so most people begin within a few weeks of their free consultation.

Yes, adults can absolutely be evaluated for ADHD. The core symptoms are the same, including difficulty with focus, organization, and impulsivity, but ADHD often looks different in adults compared to children. In children, hyperactivity is often more obvious, while adults may experience it more as internal restlessness or trouble relaxing.

Adult ADHD evaluations in Denver and Greenwood Village focus heavily on how symptoms affect work, relationships, and overall day-to-day functioning. Clinicians will also explore how these challenges may have been present during childhood, since ADHD is a lifelong condition.

In adult evaluations, self-report plays a larger role. Adults are asked to describe their own experiences and struggles, while children’s evaluations also rely on input from parents and teachers. For adults, clinicians may also ask about coping strategies and check for other common co-occurring conditions, such as anxiety or depression.

No, there’s no single test that can diagnose ADHD. It’s not like a blood test that gives a clear yes or no answer.

ADHD is a clinical diagnosis based on a combination of factors — including the symptoms you experience, your personal and family history, and how much these challenges interfere with your daily life.

To make a diagnosis, clinicians use several tools, such as structured interviews, standardized rating scales (Conners-4, BASC-3, BRIEF-2), cognitive tests (WISC-5, WPPSI-IV), and tests of attention, working, memory, and executive functioning (D-KEFS, NEPSY-II, CVLT-II, WRAML-3). This thorough, multi-step process helps ensure the diagnosis is accurate and that any other possible causes are considered.

Even if you’re unsure whether your child has ADHD, ADHD testing in Denver and Greenwood Village can provide valuable insight into their strengths, struggles, and how they think and process the world.

If ADHD is identified, a diagnosis opens the door to helpful support like classroom accommodations, behavioral strategies, and tools to improve focus and organization.

If it turns out your child doesn’t have ADHD, the evaluation can still uncover other possible explanations for their challenges, including anxiety, a learning disability, or emotional struggles, and provide recommendations to help address those concerns.

Either way, the process helps both you and your child gain a better understanding of their unique strengths and challenges, increasing self-awareness and providing clear, practical strategies for moving forward.

It’s completely normal for parents to wonder what an ADHD diagnosis means for their child’s future, and to have concerns about treatment options.

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, treatment is typically tailored to their unique needs. Most treatment plans use a multimodal approach, which means combining different types of support for the best results.

Behavioral therapy is often a key part of treatment. This helps both your child and your family learn practical strategies for managing impulsivity, improving focus, and building better organizational habits.

Medication, including both stimulant and non-stimulant options, can also be recommended. These medications work by helping to regulate brain chemicals involved in attention, focus, and self-control.

In addition to therapy and medication, school-based supports like 504 Plans or IEPs can provide important accommodations to help your child succeed in the classroom.

Your clinician will walk you through all the options, including the benefits and any potential side effects, so you can make informed decisions that feel right for your family. The goal is always to create a plan that supports your child’s success — both now and in the future.
